Progressive State-Wide Coalitions
We believe that environmentalists, in order to be effective, must join forces with other movements and constituencies sharing their fundamental vision for the future. To encourage the development of such long-term collaborations and partnerships, the Beldon Fund supports state-wide coalitions involving a range of progressive constituencies, including labor, civil rights, women, environmental and low-income community organizations.

Special Grants Initiative
In 1995, the Beldon II Fund launched a special initiative to support organizations that train and assist environmental advocates. Over the past years, the environmental movement has been challenged by an increasingly hostile political climate and its own lack of long-term, unified vision. We hope that these grants will improve the environmental movement's ability to respond effectively to these challenges.
Special Initiative: General Grants
• Environmental Policy Project - Washington, DC
Special Initiative: Anti-Violence Grants
As part of the Special Grants Initiative, we worked for a second year with Anne Fitzgerald Associates to identify opportunities to address rising levels of violence against environmental activists and the effect of such violence on activism, particularly in isolated rural communities. In 1997, we made the following grants:
• Montana Human Rights Network - Helena, MT
• New Mexico Center for Dispute Resolution - Albuquerque, NM
• High Plains News Service - Billings, MT
• Political Research Associates - Somerville, MA
• Western States Center - Portland, OR
